Request: Air Plants

This post is by request from a friend. I'm pretty fortunate to have air plants fall into my yard from our huge oak tree in the front. They may not be the "fancy" kind, but they are still just as nice. I started collecting them a few weeks ago and have been looking for ways to decorate with them. 

Air plants are great for adding some color and nature to your house setting. They grow differently from your typical house plant because they don't need much water or attention, or soil. As with any tropical type plant, you need to protect them from frost and give them bright, filtered light.

If you decide to display them inside and the air is dry, you will need to submerge the plant in water for an hour or so every couple of weeks. If the location is more shaded, you can mist them a few times a month.

Mystery Solved!

A few years ago while on a trip to NYC I saw a sticker on a light post. I was attracted to it because I have Peruvian blood running through me. Not knowing any idea what it was or what it meant, I snapped a pic of it. I just tried to look for the photo I took of it, but am realizing it was on the great hard drive crash of 2009. I just clicked a link on my dad's facebook page which took me to Gawker Artists. There was a little blurb on it.

 Peru Ana Ana Peru originated in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York. We are two people, a guy and a girl, or, if you will, a girl and a guy. Currently we spend a good amount of our time making random trinkets and then leaving them on the streets for other people to find, as well as trying to be able to solve a rubik's cube in under a minute.

Their webpage is just a mirror, so there isn't anymore information...but further searching shows me that they do some other fun things around the city.

So there is my you learn something new everyday

Open Plan Kitchen/Dining

What I loved so much about my last house was that the kitchen and dining room were open to each other. It keeps the conversation going and makes whoever is cooking that night not feel like a prisoner. Everyone tends to hover in the kitchen at parties and every day anyway, so it makes sense to have them in one place.

Nostalgems

I was very fortunate to win a giveaway a few weeks ago from Nostalgems after becoming a fan on her facebook page. I first discovered Rina Ward's etsy shop while researching apothecary bottles months ago. She makes the most darling jewelery using small bottles and little mementos of far off places. 

Don't you love receiving letters from far off places? I do. I love to look at the stamps and imagine how far it traveled. Auckland is far off for me (8,082 miles to be exact).

Anyways, I won a small accordion story book of Alice in Wonderland.

It is so adorable. I think I may but it in a small bottle and sit it on my desk, or perhaps but it on a windowsill.

Tunage Thursday - The Secret Garden Videos

This week's Tunage Thursday doesn't focus on a specific artist, but rather another blog with a music series named The Secret Garden Videos. It's very similar to my favorite source of impromptu performances, la blogotheque. That is okay with me, I love watching music happen without a lot of production and scripts. This demo reel features a lot of great great great musicians, starting with a personal favorite The Tallest Man on Earth. He has a new album coming out in April called The Wild Hunt. Check out the blog Hooves on the Turf  for more music goodies.

Decoupaging Furniture: Papillon

I finally finished my first decoupaged piece of furniture. I started the project last month at the craft brunch I held at my house. The weather ended up getting too cold to bring it out and finish veneering it, so its been sitting in the middle of my bedroom waiting.

I had a lot of fun doing this. It has imperfections in it so I know there is room for me to improve, but for my first try, I am very happy with it. The drawers were black already so I touched them up with a little more black paint. Then I used some mod podge to paste my butterflies onto the wood. I ended up doing a few coats to make sure it would stay on, and I ended up applying mod podge over the whole thing so the finish blended.

I made custom drawer liners out of scrapbooking paper and repainted the knobs turquoise. Lastly, I applied two coats of spray veneer onto it made sure it dried well. I love how it came out. This is certainly a project I will do again.
