Discovered some gems in my grandfather's box of photos my dad brought.

My mom came to visit

Had friends over. Had family over. Did everything. Did nothing.

Olive Season in France

I am a very lucky girl to have actual family that lives in the South of France. People don't make it up when they say France is a beautiful country, it is the truth. France is a BEAUTIFUL country. I first went when I was a few months old. My mother bundled me up and took me on the long flight to see my grandparent's who were living there with their youngest daughter (my aunt). It has been a long time since that trip, and I have been blessed to go back several times. Both my grandparents passed years ago, but luckily my aunt stayed, married, and started her family. It is bittersweet since I don't get to see her as often as I like. The power of facebook though does allow us to keep in constant contact.

Abuela and me in France

She posted some pictures the other day of her friend's harvesting of their olive trees. I thought all of you out in Rue land would love to take a behind the scenes peak at this annual ritual that takes place in November and December in the region.

The production of olive oil is a long and delicate job. Olive oil cultivation takes place in only eight of the sunniest regions of France. The Provence Alps-Cote-D’azur region of France produces about 2/3 of the olive oil produced (source). The end result is pure liquid gold. The olives are harvested from the trees by a good simple shake. Netting is put down around the trees beforehand to gather all of them that fall.

Once the olives have been harvested, all the misc stems and such have to be cleaned. In order to avoid oxidation, the olives have to be immediately crushed along with the pits. My aunt's friends drop it off at a local place, as it is quite involved and requires certain machinery. You have to give a LOT to get so little.

Voilà!

The final product. Yum yum yum.

Check out the French kitchen as well. Wood counters, farmhouse sinks...

Fall is Underway

Fall is upon us. I'm excited that here in the sunshine state it stayed below 85 degrees for the better part of this week. It's all relative. Come December I'll still be loving it here, but go ahead and ask me in June.

I started this wreath at one of our weekly project nights. I repurposed my original Halloween wreath for this new fall one. I bought a jet black one at 70% clearance so I took all the cobwebs and spiders and put it there. You'll have to wait until next year to see it though...

I am really happy with how this came out though. The oranges and red go great against our green front door. I love that my craft addictions had let me have practically everything I needed to do this project. The bird cage I scored at Michaels for $1 a few months ago. I did have to go out and buy the little gourds and fall flowers, but with clearance I paid $1.70 for both. Momma loves those bargains, it makes me not feel so bad for always buying craft stuff!

I had to step away from online for a moment. I decided to take it upon myself to change some things around the ol' blog and I broke it. So far so good and we are back to blogging. I've always wanted to say "We are live"

Enjoy the link to a beautiful Brooklyn based soap and flower company. I want to be in Brooklyn right now and I definitely want to bathe in these soaps.

A Camping We Will Go

This past weekend was the coldest it has been so far this season. This wouldn't be a bad fact if my husband and I hadn't agreed to take part in our kid's school sponsored camping trip. I'm not much of a camping person. I can count how many times I have gone on one hand. The last time we went camping was many Junes ago in the Florida keys. The heat, the rain, the shell bottom floor...it is by far one of the worst days we have ever experienced as a family unit...however the most memorable one. So I was determined to put all that stuff aside, because its all for the kids anyways right?

We had a fire going.

I'm not going to lie, there were some brutal times, especially when it came to sleeping, but overall we walked away with some great memories. We are already planning another weekend away after Thanksgiving. Our family set up camp right in front of some pet goats, so I easily imagined myself camping in the French countryside. Salut petit chèvre ..

 I am really cozy here.

I brought my bird book and guide but sadly didn't do any hiking. I caught two cranes on Saturday and an eagle Sunday morning. That was it for this bird nerd.

Anyways, Monday's are officially catch up time for me. So we will talk together au demain
