If you like turquoise...

Then you must follow House of Turquoise. I have always been drawn to the color ever since my mother painted my bedroom walls the color as a child. It was also the color of choice that sat in the glass Heinz ketchup bottle in our kitchen. My parents used it as an inexpensive play form of art. Back then I just thought it was weird. Thank you so much Erin for putting into the spotlight a color that just makes life that much more colorful!

Go beyond those doors...

...come and make yourself something yummy to eat...

...and then rest your head.

Punky Craft Brunch

I had some girlfriends over yesterday for brunch. Everyone was required to bring a dish and a project to work on. It was a lot of fun! We have already talked about making it a regular thing, and even focusing on a particular project. Henna, Sewing, Candle Making, etc. The weather was beautiful and I opened up some windows. We had a lot of food and a lot of drinks to keep us content. It was nice to have a girl chat and then be totally quiet as we focused on our work. A few friends painted, we had some decoupage going on, and an exasperated origami project.

My friend Molly seen in the pic above was doing a test run of another project we are going to undertake. When we had my b-day party a few months back, one of the materials we used was about 50 yards of muslin cotton. Now that is a lot of fabric, and I've been trying to come up with some ideas of what to do with it (drawer sachets, dolls, curtains). A few of us thought of stretching it and using it as a canvas. So that is what Molly did. Took her a bit of time but she put a few layers of gesso on it and it looks as though it is going to hold up well. Here's Molly about to start painting it...

It is a work in progress so there is after picture to show. I started work on a great project, but its not complete yet so I will save it for another post. I just have to put some finishing touches on it. That's what happens when you are the host, you are the last to start :)

Tunage Thursday er Friday : Joanna Newsom

Well I suppose the problem with trying to do something new like a weekly feature is that I have to be consistent! Yeah, totally forgot yesterday.

I've been listening to Joanna Newsom a lot this week. She is very quirky as she rocks that harp out! Enjoy!

French Market Party : Inspiration to Reality

This is a couple months late, but at the end of November I threw myself a birthday party. I was trying to think of a theme, something fun and concise, and it was pretty clear that I had to do something French. I tailored it a little bit more and decided to make it a French market. I envisioned the colors of Provence and tables filled with amazing food. Man, did we run with this! I came up with this story board when I was starting to plan it.

We had to have the right food. Our menu consisted of fresh baguettes from the local french bakery, 5 different kinds of cheeses, a crazy amount of sliced meats, homemade tapenade, small quiches, lots of fresh fruits, tarts, and cookies. Oh and 3 different bottles of wine!

The decor was insane. We decided to have the party in the front of my house. It is on a busy road so we (my husband) constructed a wall out of pvc pipes. We bought a bunch of muslin cotton and used it to hang as a makeshift wall. Once that baby was up, I couldn't tell you how many cars would slow down as they passed our house. What was going on behind the curtains?? I did a bunch of crafts; painted chalkboards, made vases with vintage French labels, made shabby chic bird houses, and made my own wine tags with French vocabulary.

It was definitely a memorable night. At that time it was really one of our first cold nights so we had two fires going on. I asked everyone to dress up in their best French attire so everyones scarves and berets helped keep them warm. It was perfect.

Painting appliances?

Diyideas.com posted this picture on their facebook page the other day. It could be a dead ringer for our kitchen in the house that we currently rent. The downfalls of renting (and I'm sure we could all name a few...) is that there is minimal things you can do when the place isn't yours. We have a pretty good arrangement with our landlord that we can update things here or there and deduct it from our rent. We have repainted some rooms and switched out some lighting and accessories. Works out for him of course!

Now that picture isn't an exact picture because we don't have stainless steel appliances (some white, some beige), we don't have wood cabinets with beautiful details (white cheap ones), our countertops are not marble (gray formica), and the window isn't huge with gorgeous molding (old black window that cannot be open) BUT IT'S THE SAME SHAPE YA'LL!

Anyways, one of the main items that bugs me in the kitchen is that the fridge and exhaust are a beige color, but the dishwasher and stove are white. I've been doing some research and it looks as though there are paints out there that you can use to update these appliances. I obviously would choose to have the appliances be white instead of beige.

The spray one seems to be the most popular and cheapest solution (about $6/can). I am going to keep researching...I've seen other sites out there saying you can roll on paint. This would be easier for me so I could keep the project inside. I do not feel like moving the fridge outside for this project. Its too cold anyways and this is only a rental house :)

Anybody have any experience or words of wisdom?

Oh my little Anglophiles....

Post card boxed set of 100 vintage book covers from Penguin Books. Pre-order now on Amazon for only $16.50. It isn't being released until the end of October. I want this. Like bad.

Happy Mardi Gras!

I went to Mardi Gras once in my early 20s. It was a whirlwind trip that seemed to be over before it started. The Bed and Breakfast we stayed at was haunted. The food was outrageous. The coffee was strong. The drinks were stronger. You can't help but fall in love with the city. Although I will probably never go back for those festivities (really, that is fine with me!) - I would love to get away for a weekend and explore the city, visit some beautiful shops, and bring some treasures home.

New Orleans has a style as distinct as the city itself. Powdered with traditional southern details, the French influence is strong and decadent. Cast iron railings and lush outdoor courtyards are my idea of a perfect life. Antique French furniture? Check! Ornamental Iron? Absolutment!

Learn Something New Everyday: Knock Out Roses

I've always loved roses, but always considered them out of my reach as the occasional gardener. I have a large collection of orchids, but their care is pretty easy in my eyes. I can handle a few potted plants, but I don't have the time to really cultivate something. I was glad to learn about this variety of roses from one of my gardener buddies. I will be looking out for them next time I visit a nursery. I may even wait until the annual Leu Gardens Plant Sale since it is happening in only a few weeks. We usually get our new plants there.

  • disease resistant
  • generous bloom cycle (5-6 weeks)
  • self-cleaning
  • thrive in almost every area of the country
  • easy to care for

Tunage Thursdays - Bowerbirds

Today's Tunage Thursday is a folk band from North Carolina called the Bowerbirds. I'm a little partial to them right now, because I am going to see them perform tonight at a small venue (always the best!). With only three members, they are able to perform with many instruments, including one of my favorites, the violin. Seriously who doesn't love music with some violin?

This video is filmed by one of my favorite places on the web, la blogotheque. This french music site is filled with Take-Away Shows (Concerts à Emporter) with many notable indie musicians. These music performances are filmed in impromptu spaces (walking the streets, on a bus, in a store).

Enjoy some violin strings in a cab ride to take you away this Thursday morning

Fleur-de-Lis

The Fleur-de-Lis has long been the most recognizable image of French monarchy. Translation meaning Lily Flower, it is a simple way to add the French look to any room in your house. It also is the symbol for our family team so you can imagine I have some happy people living there today.

Paper/Papier Mache

I have been thinking about this a lot lately and want to give it ago. I am certain I have come a long way since the days of elementary school, but maybe I have not. Started doing some research and found out that there are different recipies you can try. The only recipe I knew consisted of glue so this is opening up something very new for me. Anybody have any experience?

I am pretty positive I cannot do this! Peacock $200 Stray Dog Designs

The Black Spot Books

Anthropologie Knock-off Ideas

If you are like me, you find that Anthropologie is a great source of inspiration. If you are also like me, you can't afford anything in there! Oh wait, you can afford a knob, but certainly not a switchplate.

Songbird Chandelier $First Born

So I've gathered some links from some other craft souls who have taken it upon themselves to make some pretty beautiful stuff. All inspired by Anthropologie, and all a fraction of the cost. Enjoy!
